According to the Motor Vehicles Act 1988, all vehicle owners must get their vehicles duly registered with the RTO (Regional Transport Office). Note: The registration number that you get when you buy the car is a temporary number given by the dealer. You should not confuse it with a permanent registration that is issued by RTO as per the rules of the Motor Vehicles Act,1988.

Purpose of RTO Form 20

Applying for registration or licence related to motor vehicles, requires you to first fill an application form to the RTO. In case of registering your motor vehicle, you have to fill out RTO Form 20. The form is the application that you fill out to get a permanent registration number.

How to Download RTO Form 20?

Downloading RTO Form 20 is as easy as filling out an application online and you can follow the below-mentioned steps-

• Step 1

Visit the Sarathi Parivahan website.

• Step 2

On the top of the page, you will be able to see "Informational Service". Click on the option.

• Step 3

A drop-down menu will appear with the "Downloaded forms" option. Hover over the option and you will be able to see a separate mini menu.

• Step 4

Select "All forms" from the menu and then open "Form 20".

You will be redirected to a new page with your application form for registration- Form 20.

How to fill out RTO Form 20?

RTO Form no 20 is slightly lengthy but requires you to fill in basic details, so you do not need to panic by looking at the size of the form. To help you understand the form better and prepare you beforehand, these broken-down points can be followed-

1. Firstly, the form is divided into four sections-

◦ First section- Required for all vehicle types

◦ Second section- Required only for transport vehicles

◦ Third section- Refers to an inspection certificate

◦ Fourth section- Required for official certification.

2. Details that need to be filled out are as follows:

• Step 1

Fill in your details, including your name, phone number, father's name and address in points 1 to 5.

• Step 2

Point 6 requires you to fill in your PAN card details.

• Step 3

Point 7 is about your birthplace. In case, you have moved to India from a foreign land, you have to mention that is point 8.

• Step 4

Point 9 & 10 requires you to fill in details about your vehicle's purchase date and the dealer's name and address.

• Step 5

Make sure to carefully fill in details asked under 12 and 13 points about your vehicle class.

• Step 6

Now is the time you fill out the technical details about your vehicle. These questions are mentioned in points 14 to 26.

• Step 7

Point 27 is applicable if you have a second-hand vehicle. You will have to mention the date of purchase, previous owner and so on. Here, you also have to fill in details about the car's colour, wings and front end. This is needed for recognition purposes.

• Step 8

Another important detail has to be mentioned from points 29 to 32. This is in regards to the kind of your vehicle- transport, weight, rigid weight, vehicle measurements and so on.

• Step 9

Points 33 to 36 are added in case you need additional semi-trailer, such as tire description and max axle weight on each component.

• Step 10

Under points 37 and 38, you are asked to fill in details about your car insurance .

• Step 11

Once you have filled out the form, you have to fill in the fees you paid for registration and attach your signature/thumb impression. Here, you also have to identify the type of vehicle you are driving.

• Step 12

Lastly, you also need your financier to endorse the form along with your declaration.

3. Once you are done with these points, you will reach part 3 of the form, which requires the signature of the inspecting authority, thereby granting you inspection clearance.

4. Following this, your financed and inspecting authority signs the 4th part, clearing your application for registration.

5. You will receive a registration certificate via mail first, and the same will be delivered to your address. You can also collect it from the RTO nearby.
