Electric vehicles are no longer a thing of the future. They are here and people are buying them in large numbers. Apart from good looks, these bikes pack a punch with their eco-friendliness, comfortable usage and easy maintenance. Plus, it’s easy to get two-wheeler insurance for them. To understand the multiple reasons that are driving their quick adoption, read on. It will help you make an informed decision about buying an electric bike for yourself.
1. They are cheaper to run:
With petrol prices in triple digits in many states, the cost of running a conventional two-wheeler is soon going to be exorbitant. However, electric two-wheelers are the perfect answer to the problem. Unlike petrol bikes, you can charge the battery of an electric bike with just tens of rupees, whereas filling the average 10 litre tank of a motorcycle will cost you nearly or over thousands of rupees.
2. They are cheaper to maintain:
The maintenance cost of any petrol-powered two-wheeler can run into thousands of rupees over the years. In many cases, the cost of the engine oil itself can be as high as the cost of filling up a tank, particularly if you are looking to use synthetic engine oil which costs at least three times as much as traditional, mineral based oil. Then there are labour costs and part costs of traditional bikes to consider. But over its lifetime, an electric bike will cost you less than 10 percent of an internal combustion engine (ICE) bike.
3. They are simpler to ride:
One big problem with conventional fuel bikes is that they come with clutch and transmission. You need to manually shift gears in a petrol bike. This is difficult to learn and takes a lot of time to master. Even after that, you may end up with an occasional botched gear shift. This may lead to gear grinding or worn out clutch plates, which cost a lot to replace. Electric bikes do not have any such problem because there is no concept of transmission in them. All the torque is available to you from the go, so they are way easier to master.
4. They are as easy to insure as standard bikes:
Two-wheeler insurance for an electric bike costs the same as any conventional bike. You need to provide similar details and the same companies offer similar deals on electric bikes as traditional bike models.
5. They are helpful in cutting road emissions:
Easily, the biggest problem of traditional two-wheelers is that they are a very big source of pollution. Being based on hydrocarbon fuels, they contribute a lot to carbon emissions in India. And since India is one of the largest two-wheeler makers and markets in the world, the road pollution caused by two-wheelers is also very high. Battery electric vehicles of any kind do not contribute to road pollution because they are zero emission mobility devices. If you really care about the environment, the planet and the next generation, electric bikes should be the preferred mode of transportation for you.
6. They do not require a Pollution Under Control Certificate:
A pollution under control certificate is a mandatory document for any person who wants to drive a vehicle with an internal combustion engine in India. If you are caught driving a petrol bike without a valid PUC certificate, the traffic police will issue you a heavy challan running into thousands of rupees. Electric bikes do not have any such problem. They do not have an internal combustion engine and there is no smoke exhaust, so a PUC is simply not needed. That means, you get to save a lot of time and money which would have otherwise been spent on getting the PUC for an ICE bike.
7. They are a pleasure to ride:
One big problem with bikes with internal combustion engines is that they vibrate. Essentially, thousands of explosions go on in the engine camber every minute. This leads to a lot of vibration in the engine and in the entire vehicle. Two problems arise out of the incessant vibration - it makes a lot of noise which annoys you and the vibration itself tires your body. With an electric bike, there is no such vibration because there is no engine. Road vibration and engine hum are handled well by these bikes for a pleasurable ride.
8. They look great:
When it comes to conventionally powered bikes, unless you are riding a superbike, no one will pay much attention. The market is so flooded with regular commuter bikes that no one really cares about when a model comes or goes. They are just tools for people to go from one place to another and new ones do not turn any heads. With an electric bike though, the scenario is completely different. They are total head turners and people will give you all the attention you want. They might also ask questions or even want to have a go on your bike.
All in all, an electric bike scores better than a traditional bike any day, and on many parameters. So, research and buy the one you like today. Since getting two-wheeler insurance for it will be a breeze, you can protect your bike as well as your pocket easily.
