Travelling during COVID? Make sure you pack these 10 essentials

Thanks to vaccines, the pandemic situation is getting a little better all over the world. Consequently, lockdowns are easing, and people are slowly exploring the world of travel once again. However, you need to do more than check which states or countries are opening up for you and get an online travel insurance policy (which is essential to prepare for emergencies). Your packing list now will look nothing like the one you used to follow in the pre-pandemic era. So, take a look at the 10 essentials you need to carry with you to keep the coronavirus at bay.

  1. Masks–Choose good quality masks that are soft and breathable yet sufficiently protective (preferably with three layers). You can carry a bunch of N95 if you want or go for a few reusable masks that are hypoallergenic and antibacterial. They should fit you well and cover both mouth and nose.
  2. Wipes that disinfect–You will come across multiple commonly used surfaces when you are travelling, and virus tends to linger on them if an infected person touches them. So, carry a set of disinfectant wipes that have a hydrogen peroxide base or bleach base. You can carry a small pack in your handbag and a large pack in your suitcase.
  3. Sanitizer with more than 60% alcohol content–Carry a sanitiser that preferably destroys 99.99 percent bacteria and germs. Pick something that doesn’t feel sticky after use.
  4. Face shields–These are going to be of immense help if you want to avoid touching your face, eyes, mouth and nose unmindfully. Moreover, if someone sneezes or coughs near you, a face shield can provide extra protection apart from your mask.
  5. Thermometer –Since fever is a common symptom of COVID infection, keep a thermometer handy, so you can monitor your temperature. Try to choose a light, digital one that shows accurate and clear readings.
  6. Toilet paper–Using the toilet paper in public bathrooms at airports, restaurants or tourist spots can be a little unsafe as you don’t know how hygienically the person who went before you touched it. So, carry a roll with you. It will come in handy in case you don’t have access to water too.
  7. Portable power bank –Depending on how long your trip is, your mobile device is likely to run out of juice at some point. And hunting for a free power outlet can be tricky. Plus, since these outlets in public places are touched by countless people, you might want to minimise contact. In such cases, a portable power bank will be super useful.
  8. A credit card that needs no contact–Whether you are paying at a restaurant, hotel, or a store, your credit or debit card gets swiped through machines that handle millions other cards. And that makes it easy for the virus to cross over. The same logic holds if you let someone else touch your card. So, carry a contactless credit card that you can hold close to the card reader and make the payment.
  9. Disposable seat covers–Whether you are flying or travelling by train or bus, carry protective seat covers made of materials that are medical-grade. Choose those that repel dust and water and have elastic fasteners to fit them on different seats easily.
  10. Oximeter – If you suffer from lifestyle diseases or pre-existing health conditions like diabetes, high blood pressure, cardiac problems and such, carry a digital oximeter with you. It will help you track your oxygen level and seek help if it goes down.

Don’t forget travel insurance

Getting online travel insuranceis not just easy and quick, but also a sensible move if you are travelling during COVID. The best insurance providers offer policies that cover the cost of medical expenses that may arise in case you contract COVID and need hospitalisation. You can be prepared for eventualities like accidents, permanent disability or even death with such a policy. A holistic travel insurance policy will offer coverage in case of repatriation of mortal remains and medical evacuation. While travelling, if you lose your passport or checked-in baggage, or get robbed, or there is a delay in your flight, your policy will again protect you financially. It can handle expenses in case you end up causing damage to any third party by accident.

Final words

Getting insured and packing right can make your travels during COVID safe and stress-free. Also, avoid traveling if you feel sick or seek medical help immediately if you don’t feel well during transit or after reaching your destination. Take care to protect yourself as well as others.
